Thanks for giving me an excuse to post this awesome song.
On this day of your life, dear friend, I believe God wants you to know…
...that love, in fact, is the agent of universal synthesis.
Pierre Teilhard De Chardin said that, and he was right.
It is the energy that ties everything together…and
everything falls apart without it.
If your own life is “falling apart” at some level, maybe
it’s time to add some love. But don’t wait to receive it.
Act like you can’t wait to give it.
Smother life with love and watch everything come
together again!
Love, Your Friend….

So I had a cup of (when I say cup, keep in mind, this is a 20 ounce cup!) of coffee with a tablespoon of coconut oil. Then I had a cup with about a teaspoon of cinnamon. I worked out about 30 minutes after that. I feel… interesting. It was a great workout, I feel like I could do another one. Perhaps it was the coconut oil?
I’ll check with ketostix after work today, but I think I will be in ketosis by then. I feel strangely energetic and have zero apetite, which are both good signs.
Who could ask for more? Everybody’s coming, leave your body at the door…
Don’t be afraid of what you can’t see. It’s only me.
I definitely don’t feel like I’m in ketosis, and haven’t lost any water weight, and the Ketostix aren’t even showing trace. I need to figure out what I’m doing wrong. I think my fat intake has been too low and maybe the peanuts have been keeping me out of ketosis.
I just read some interesting posts on a low carb forum about coconut oil helping to boost metabolism and get into ketosis faster. So I put a tablespoon in my coffee this morning. I’ve also read about adding things like cinnamon and chromium to the diet to help speed the elimination of sugar from the bloodstream.
The most frustrating thing is that I even fasted yesterday until 6:00 PM.
At any rate, I’m determined to get back into ketosis. Breakfast this morning was boiled eggs and cheddar cheese. Should be high enough fat (with the coconut oil) to help me get there. Lunch will be canned tuna with mayo. This should also be high enough fat.
The trick is to have so much fat that you force the body into ketosis. Having too high of a protein/fat ratio could cause gluconeogenesis (the conversion of protein to glucose). We really don’t want that.
Paul Newman died today. In memory of a great actor and a great man, I want to post some quotes from one of my favorite Newman movies, Cool Hand Luke.
Boy, do I love dark chocolate. I wish I could find some made with xylitol locally. Anyway, it is really good for you, and you only need a tiny bit (6.7 grams). Check out this Web MD article:
Sept. 25, 2008 — A piece of dark chocolate a day — a very small piece — keeps the doctor away.
An Italian study shows that dark chocolate can significantly reduce the inflammation that leads to cardiovascular disease. The ideal amount is 6.7 grams per day (0.23 ounces). A typical Hershey chocolate bar weighs about 43 grams. That means eating one dark chocolate bar over the course of 6 1/2 days to get 6.7 grams per day.
Milk chocolate doesn’t appear to offer the same benefits.
If you don’t like dark chocolate, well, you are gonna die. So suck it up girly men and wussy girls, and learn to love the dark, sweet, bitter, goodness of dark chocolate. It’ll put hair on your chest and keep your ticker ticking.
Of course, you have to watch those Italians. They elect adult film stars to parliament. What does that tell you?
It is Friday. Yay!
Anyway, I stumbled across this vid on youtube and thought that the ladies in my life might find it inspirational (I think many guys might, as well, but wouldn’t admit it).
Happy Friday ladies!
Well, I’m up five pounds this morning. This is a combination of water weight and transient matter in the colon. This weight will be gone probably by Sunday.
Now that I’ve met my 10 pound weight loss in a week goal, I’m looking to the future and deciding what I want to do next. I may be able to do the 10 pound weight loss in a week again, but the returns will start to gradually diminish. I think it is better to go the slow and steady route (thanks for reminding me Tusc!).
With that in mind. My new goal is to weigh 350 pounds by Thanksgiving. I will need to lose 3.5 pounds per week to make this goal. I think this is achievable while not continually starving myself. I will continue my intermittent fasting, but this frees me up to eat at least 2000 calories on my non-fasting days. On those days, it will be low carb. I may still give myself a cheat meal once in a while, but in the first five weeks I didn’t have one. I should, however, have at least one a week, to keep my metabolism up.
I will then enjoy Thanksgiving (and leftovers) the old fashioned way, with lots of fat and carbs! I will not worry about my weight too much for the 3 days following Thanksgiving. I will just enjoy what I eat and try to focus on the simple things:
I’m trying to find my non-dieting strategy of weight maintenance. I will also be taking a break from lifting weights during this time, as you should take a break from this every few months to give your system a chance to fully recovery. I will start walking during this time, as I’ve read that walking helps people who’ve lost weight to keep more of it off, long term, and because walking soothes the soul.
Once I’ve done this, I will probably do what I did last week, just to jump start the process (and quickly take off any weight I’ve regained) for another week, and then switch back to my 2000 calorie per day low carb diet/intermittent fasting until Christmas. Christmas will be a one day thing (no stretching out the Holiday eating for the entire month of December!) and New Years Eve, I’ll have a glass of champagne.
For the New Year, I should start out at a weight of 335 or so. Not bad, considering what I started out 2008 at (425 pounds).
I almost lost faith. That little cheat meal thrown in the middle threw me for a loop as it kicked me out of ketosis and made me gain a few pounds of water weight. I held steady though, and believed in myself.
How did I do it? Well, one explanation may be my seratonin levels. If you go back to my sleep article, you’ll see that I’ve come across a couple means to keep my seratonin levels high. I got this email article today from the Men’s Health Belly Off Club newsletter:
FIGHT FAT WITH A GOOD ATTITUDE
Think you could be thin? With an attitude like that, you will be. Scientists found that the feel-good brain chemical, serotonin, not only helps regulate appetite, but may also increase the rate at which fat is broken down for energy.OK, so this study was done on worms—study leaders aren’t positive the same effect would be true for humans. But even so, overcome your fears and self-doubt by carving your weight-loss path with positive thinking.
I may have stumbled on to the key. Mental health certainly is THE KEY to weight loss, and I really think that obesity needs to be handled as a mental illness. It is a sure sign of an addiction and an inability to deal with emotions in a positive way.
At any rate, I am very happy with my succes and I’m contemplating doing this same routine every 8 weeks or so. I will post an article later today on why dieting for long periods of time is bad juju.
But it’s been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise -
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race -
And I ain’t gonna lose -We are the champions – my friends
And we’ll keep on fighting – till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
‘Cause we are the champions – of the world -
Amen Freddie, Amen.
I wanted to say thanks to a few people. Tusc, SK, Chris, and especially my Mom, who is on her own successful weight loss journey and who has listened to me blather on and on about this stuff incessantly for years. You all have been there for me and you are all good people. Thanks!
I also wanted to thank two big inspirations. Neale Donald Walsch and Richard Bandler. Both have changed me into a better human being through their writings and seminars.
