Low Carb Chicken Fried Rice recipe from MuscleHack.com.

24 10 2008

My buddy Mark McManus from MuscleHack.com has posted a great low carb chicken fried rice recipe.

My friend TuscanyStone has been on me to eat more veggies, so this is a perfect recipe that sounds like it is going to taste good and give me more veggies.

Chicken Fried Rice is one of my favorite dishes to pick up from my local Chinese take-away (only at the weekends of course).

Making a low-carb version seemed impossible until I discovered the perfect substitute for rice – grated cauliflower.

Cauliflower is amazing stuff. You can use it in place of potatoes in mashed potatoes AND potato salad. I need to add some to my shopping list.

New practice.

22 10 2008

After my friend SK pointed me to the site AnmolMehta.com, I decided to take up some basic yoga practice. I’m doing the first free yoga set on the site which features spinal stretches. I’ve also started to learn Breath Of Fire.

I didn’t realize how good or peaceful this would make me feel! I’m definitely a convert.

In addition to lifting weights and eating right, I now take time out each day for basic yoga, breathing, and meditation.

Israel Kamakawiwo Ole’ – Hawaii 78

20 10 2008

Iz’s words and voice really reach right down into my soul.

UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO O HAWAII

(rough transalation: The constant, wet Rain Gives Life to the land
and brings goodness/change to Hawaii)

If just for a day our king and queen
would visit all these islands and saw everything
How would they feel ’bout the changing of our land
Could you just imagine if they were around
and saw highways on their sacred grounds
How would they feel if they ’bout this modern city life

Tears would come from each others eyes as
they would stop to realize
that our people are in great, great danger now

How would they feel
would their smiles be content
rather than cry
cry for the gods, cry for the people
cry for the land that was taken away
and in it you’ll find Hawaii

Could you just imagine if they came back
and saw traffic lights and railroad tracks
How would they feel about this modern city life
Tears would come from each others eyes as
they would stop to realize
that our land is in great, great danger now

All of the fighting that the king had done
to conquer all these islands
now there’s condominiums
How would he feel if saw Hawaii now

How would he feel
would his smile be content
rather than cry
cry for the gods, cry for the people
cry for the land that was taken away
and in it you’ll find Hawaii

It’s a beautiful day! Down another pound

20 10 2008

The going is slow but steady.

If you don’t drink enough water, then you really are a dumbass.

20 10 2008

What else can I say? I got this morning:

H2O Weight Loss

By Craig Ballantyne

File this one under “hard to believe.” Still, researchers from California believe they have found a simple – free – way to lose weight.

The researchers looked at 173 overweight women (aged 25-50) who reported drinking less than one liter of water per day. These women were then instructed to increase their water consumption, and were studied for a year.

Remarkably, the researchers found that the increased water intake was associated with a significant increase in both weight loss and fat loss. The results suggest that if an overweight woman drinks less than one liter of water per day, the simple act of drinking more water may be beneficial.

Do the world a favor, stop being a dumbass, please?

Boys Don’t Cry

20 10 2008

Yes, I had a breakthrough last night. Many of us disown aspects of ourselves, especially the emotions fear and sadness (men) and anger (women). A great process/book/movie about this is Genpo Roshi’s Big Heart Big Mind process.

So I brought my sadness back into the mix as a fully accredited, card-holding member of the whole.

In celebration, I wanted to post my absolutely favorite Cure song.

Boys don’t cry, but men do.

Are my calories too low?

17 10 2008

I’m having very, very bad skin lately. The skin on my arms is very dry and I’m breaking out on my face. One day the skin on my face is dry and red and the next it is greasy.

I’ve read that skin problems can be a sign of thyroid slowdown from too few calories.

So I’m eating more calories over the next few days. It’s hard because I’m not really hungry. Today I got some pork rinds and macadamia nuts. I’m feeling stuffed.

I guess I could force down some hot wings.

Making yourself eat when you aren’t hungry isn’t fun, but I guess it is a sign that I may be getting over my food addiction. I don’t want to eat, but I’m tried of looking like a troll who just had a pitchfork shoved into his face.

Low Carb Lifesavers.

15 10 2008

Being on a low carb diet long term isn’t easy, at least not at first. You do get cravings for certain things. You simply cannot deny yourself forever and hope to maintain any type of long term compliance. I’ve found several key products that I wanted to share with you that have helped me make a smoother transition to a low carb lifestyle.

La Tortilla Factory Low Carb Low Fat Tortillas

La Tortilla Factory Low Carb Low Fat Tortillas (large size) 5 grams of net carbs, 14 grams of fiber, and relatively high in protein, these tortillas are great for wraps, burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and just as a bread substitute. I eat at least one per day (on non-fasting days of course!) with my eggs for breakfast. They taste good, are very tender, and really satisfy the bread craving. They also stick to your gut well.

MaraNatha Macadamia Butter 1 gram of net carbs, 3 grams of fiber, and 2 grams of protein per 2 tablespoons. If you are a peanut butter lover like I am, then this stuff could be your new best friend. You can even have it in Induction and it won’t knock you out of ketosis. Careful though, the calories will add up fast, if you have more than a Tablespoon or so. Fortunately this stuff is even richer than peanut butter, so a little dab’ll do ya.

Eden Spicy Pumpkin Seeds Crunchy, spicy, so tasty, and so good for you! Pumpkin seeds are naturally high in Magnesium and other minerals, are high fiber and have no carbs. I love these things. They share a common downfall with other nuts and seeds though. They are a very compact source of calories. I measure mine out carefully, lest I eat the entire container.

Eden Black Soy Beans I love chili and had a hard time doing without until I discovered these little black beauties. They are a little crunchier than other beans you’d use in chili, but they are very filling. 1 gram of net carbs, 7 grams of fiber, 11 grams of protein. Also good with blackened cajun chicken as a replacement for black beans. Mmm.

GG Scandinavian Crisp Bread Another high fiber, low carb product! 2 grams net carbs, 5 grams of fiber. This cracker is another lifesaver. Great with corned beef, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and thousand island dressing as a passable reuben substitute. Also great with pate and creamy cheeses!

I purchase all of these things (and also other great organic foods and supplements) from Campbells’ Nutrition in Des Moines, IA. The store I actually go to almost daily is the West Glen store. The staff are amazingly helpful and very nice folks.

Down one more pound.

15 10 2008

I had a great fast yesterday. I didn’t break the fast at all. In fact, I haven’t had breakfast yet.

I’m down one pound on the scale. At this point, I seem to be losing about 4 pounds a week, which I think is pretty good progress. It isn’t as good as when I started, but I’ll take it.

Down two more pounds.

13 10 2008

I’m still slightly lighter than I need to be to make my goal of 350 in November. That is my midterm goal, by the way. My long term goal is 250 with 10% body fat. I may actually have to go lower than 250 and then start to add muscle.

One interesting thing I’ve learned, is that when one goes into bulking mode to try to add muscle, their current fat percentage determines how much muscle they will add and how much fat they will add. Somone who is obese (like me, currently), will add a mix of 50/50% muscle/fat. Someone who is lean will add a mix of say 75/25% muscle/fat. Why? Well, there is a very good reason. Fat produces aromatase which converts testosterone to DHT and estrogen. Estrogen is a hormone that tends to promote fat storage. This is why women tend to have a higher body fat level than men. The more fat you have, the higher your estrogen levels, so when you bulk, you’ll put on more fat than you would if you were lean.

I read an interesting comment from Dr. Michael R. Eades, MD on his blog (one of the authors of Protein Power) about a friend of his who was too skinny. His solution? Taking L-Leucine (remember from a recent post of mine, that this is one of the aminos that is ketogenic, so won’t help to drop you out of ketosis if you are a low-carber), which seems to be the key amino for adding muscle, and eating lots of calories helped this guy add 10 pounds of muscle. I’m assuming that these calories were low carb, but that isn’t specified in the comment.

This is my plan once I get down to 10% body fat, whatever weight that is. Lots of L-Leucine and lots of protein rich foods.
